Guidelines
Being a spokesperson for NABIP carries an important responsibility. Speaking with One Voice ensures clarity of purpose, unity, and strength in communication, making it easier to achieve common goals and avoid misunderstandings. NABIP has a rich history of being sought out by legislators, regulators, consumer groups, think tanks and the media for our extensive knowledge, credibility and reputation for unbiased opinion and perspective.
Therefore, no member should claim affiliation with NABIP or any state or local chapter and then speak to a legislator or reporter about an issue without both knowing what NABIP’s position is and representing NABIP’s position. It can be difficult to impossible for lawmakers and the media to make the distinction between when a NABIP leader is speaking on behalf of the association or representing a personal point of view. On issues of consequence to the association, leaders must always represent NABIP’s view or not speak to that issue.
NABIP is committed to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members, regardless of political affiliation. In line with NABIP’s values of professionalism, impartiality, and broad representation, it is essential that our chapter events avoid promoting or appearing to endorse any political party or elected official. Likewise, while our NABIP chapters are autonomous in conducting the business of the association and managing its own affairs, chapters should always consult with NABIP on all matters that may impact NABIP as a whole. Chapters should consider carefully who shall be designated to serve in a spokesperson role.
