First Timers Q&A

  1. What should I wear to the convention?

Business or business casual attire is generally appropriate. Bring a blazer or sweater, as meeting rooms can be cool. Evening events may have themed attire, so be sure to check the full agenda.

  2. Do I need to attend every session?

No, but you are encouraged to attend keynote sessions, town halls, and any breakout sessions that align with your interests, professional goals, or committee involvement.

Legislative Council Town Halls, networking events, and first-timer-friendly sessions are especially helpful for getting engaged.

  3. What is included in my registration?

Your registration includes access to general sessions, breakout sessions, town halls, networking opportunities, and most scheduled meals during the conference days.

Some special events, outings, or activities may require a separate ticket or registration. Please check the official agenda for details.

  4. How can I get involved after the convention?

Attend your local chapter meetings. Volunteer for a committee or event. Connect with your state chapter leaders, RVPs, and national leadership. Follow up with the people you meet during convention. Look for opportunities to serve, mentor, advocate, and stay engaged.

  5. What region do I belong to?

Click here to determine your region.

  6. I’m attending by myself. Will there be opportunities to meet people?

Yes. Many attendees arrive without knowing many people, and NABIP events are designed to help you connect. The First Timers Welcome Event, networking receptions, meals, and breakout sessions are all great opportunities to introduce yourself and meet other members.

  7. Who should I talk to if I have questions during the convention?

You can stop by registration, ask a NABIP staff member, connect with your state chapter leaders. NABIP members are welcoming and happy to help first timers find their way. Email jkeating@nabip.org if you still need help. 😊

  8. How do I make the most of networking events?

Start simple. Introduce yourself, share where you are from, and ask others how they are involved with NABIP. A few good conversation starters are: “Is this your first Annual Convention?” “What session are you most looking forward to?” or “How did you get involved with NABIP?”

  9. Should I bring business cards?

Business cards are helpful, but not required. You can also use your LinkedIn QR code or exchange contact information through your phone.

  10. How do I know which sessions to attend?

Review the agenda in the app and choose sessions that align with your role, interests, business goals, and areas where you want to learn more. Keynotes, town halls, and networking sessions are especially valuable for first timers.

  11. What should I do between sessions?

Use breaks to meet other attendees, visit exhibitors, check in with your chapter leaders, follow up with someone you just met, or take a few minutes to review your schedule in the app.

  12. What should I do if I feel overwhelmed?

That is completely normal. Annual Convention can be busy, especially the first time. Take a break, review your schedule, attend the sessions most important to you, and do not feel pressured to do everything.

  13. Are guests or spouses allowed at convention events?

Some events may allow guests, while others may require separate registration or tickets. Check the official agenda or registration details for each event.
